Why Garage Door Springs Break (And What It Costs to Fix)

A two-car insulated garage door weighs between 150 and 350 pounds. Cycle life is the real clock
Springs are rated in cycles, not years. One cycle is one open plus one close. A standard torsion spring is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles. A family that leaves for work, comes home for lunch, runs errands and returns in the evening can easily hit four cycles a day — about seven years of life. Add a teenager with a car and you're closer to five.
High-cycle springs rated at 25,000 or even 50,000 cycles cost modestly more and are worth it for busy doors.

Rust is the quiet killer. Humid summers and unconditioned garages put moisture on bare steel coils year-round. Corrosion creates stress risers on the wire surface, and the spring fails well short of its rated cycle count. Springs usually give you notice. Watch for:
- The door feels heavier than it used to when lifted by hand
- The opener strains or the door jerks at the start of travel
